Yet more Nova-based artwork. Not particularly great though it was intended more as a practice, lest I forget how to draw at all! It came out well enough to submit, I think - though it may be scrapped later, depending on my mood.
My main beef is the pencil strokes and I know I always have this issue. I don't know if it's my inability to create solid colouring work or the cheap make of pencils I'm using, or a combination of both. I know the tools maketh not the artist but sometimes I want to splurge all my cash on art supplies to see if it will enable me to output some higher quality work. If anyone has any tips on this, please, feel free to point them out. - Time taken: 2 hours approx. Tools used: WHSmith Sketching Pencils, WHSmith Colouring Pencils, Pilot Drawing Pens (0.1 and 0.3)
First off, Love the character design! Nova's colour scheme and wardrobe look pretty good on him : ). Also really like the shoes
In terms of colours, the shading is minimal but effective, in my experience, pencils are a pain to get smooth and for the most part it looks okay, bar the shoe-tips and scarf trails. It kinda gives me a bit of a "Sonic Battle" vibe actually heh. If your looking for a traditional media with better results, I personally find professional markers are really good and much easier to work with.
I think the main issues to work on here is clothing folds has *HelenBaby suggested. Also try working with some action poses. Sketching a character in various actions can really help for getting a feel for the characters design, and working out kinks in the design (should they arise)
Thought I'd just point out a couple of things that I personally think could have made the piece just that wee bit better. First of all it would have been nice to see clothing folds in the long bit of the scarf, especially as they're present in the part that goes around the neck. Aside from that there's next to no shading on the brown areas and I'm not sure why... I think it would have made everything look more consistent as well as just looking good in general. But aside from that its a great piece hun, well done!
This is a nice piece of work man, you've certainly improved a great deal over the years and to see what you have applied here really makes your character come to life a good deal more. One thing that is noticeable on first glance is the sharp and fluent anatomy towards your character, it certainly comes across as being much more animated and open and while perhaps in the past a bit restricted, here it comes across as much more fluent and expressive. It gives a good sense to your character body language as well informing us more of his traits than before. It certainly gives the addition to showing us your potentials and the talents that you posses when it comes to telling a story with a character.
Colouring has also been nicely approached here with the simple addition of one coat being just enough to make it stand out boldly without going beyond it. It feels just about right and expresses the right flavour and attention to make him stand out in a crowd.
Awesome work buddy! about the pencil situation, i always find that WHsmith pencils are pretty bad quality, no matter what they say on the box haha! try Sussex stationers, they still have the sale going on and i managed to get some good quality ones for quite cheap if not, you;re free to borrow mine and see how you fare ^_^ xxx
